Dale Steyn five-for inspires crushing SA win

Dale Steyn took his ninth five-wicket haul as South Africa beat Bangladesh by an innings in Bloemfontein
At least it was relatively quick and painless. South Africa's pace attack demonstrated the vast gap in class, picking off Bangladesh's batsmen like skittles in an alley to complete a comprehensive innings-and-129-run victory in the first Test in Bloemfontein. Makhaya Ntini led the attack with great aggression and control while Dale Steyn, upon whom so much rests for South Africa's future firepower, cranked up the pace with his ninth five-wicket haul.

South Africa needed to get a hurry-on. Yesterday's poor weather held up their march, and the forecast for the fifth day was sufficiently dire to focus the bowlers' minds. Unfortunately, Bangladesh's resolve wasn't quite so determined, and nor was their ability to counter and cope with the pace. Plus ca change…

To Bangladesh's credit, however, they did survive the first half-hour without losing a wicket to give them hope of avoiding another defeat. In part, this was due to Morne Morkel's wayward opening spell - a concern with Australia looming on the horizon. Wicked, sniping deliveries that spat off a length were few and far between and combined with wides, bumpers and innocuous deliveries that Mohammad Ashraful and Mehrab Hossain jnr could let go.

Middlesex upbeat over England duo

Middlesex are "very optimistic" that batsmen Andrew Strauss and Owais Shah will be available for next month's inaugural Champions League in India.

The pair are both in England's squad for the Test series against India.

England were reluctant to let them play because the Twenty20 event was so close to the start of the Test series, but their stance appears to have softened.

"We're getting very positive noises from the ECB", said Middlesex chief executive Vinny Codrington.
The lucrative event involving eight teams from around the world takes place from 3-10 December, with the final on the eve of the first Test between England and India in Ahmedabad.

Pakistan seal Windies whitewash

Pakistan completed a 3-0 one-day series whitewash over West Indies as a stellar display from Younus Khan guided them to a 31-run win in Abu Dhabi.
Younus hit 101 before he was bowled by Nikita Miller with Misbah-ul-Haq adding 79 as Pakistan set a total of 273.

Chris Gayle led the fightback with a battling 122 while Ramnaresh Sarwan (62) added 151 for the second wicket.

But after Sarwan's dismissal, West Indies crumbled, losing their last eight wickets for 74 runs.

Pakistan had endured wobbles of their own as they lost opener Salman Butt for a duck when he was caught by Daren Powell in the first over of the match.

But Younus came to the crease and quickly set about building the home side's score alongside Khurrum Manzoor (30).

The 30-year-old reached his sixth one-day hundred with a single off Powell, but just two balls later he attempted a reverse sweep off Miller and was bowled.

It was complete annihilation. Lahore Badshahs gained retribution for last season's defeat and Saturday's controversy by drubbing Hyderabad Heroes in style to lift the trophy. Hyderabad were restricted to 158 and Imran Nazir sizzled with a 44-ball 111 to end the chase in a blink.
The cheerleaders, who were supposed to dance after each boundary, were severely tested by Nazir's fury and could not match him in the end. When their dancing stopped, Lahore's players celebrated their triumph.

Faced with the same target on Saturday night, Lahore were strangely subdued at the start and were always behind the eight-ball. Not tonight. Nazir indulged himself, Imran Farhat watched, and the crowd roared as the white ball kept sailing into the sky. He didn't wait a ball to launch his assault. The first one, sent down by Abdul Razzaq, disappeared over extra-cover boundary for a six, the fifth flashed over long-off and the sixth screamed over deep midwicket. Twenty-four runs had come in the first over, Razzaq disappeared from the attack and Nazir went from strength to strength.
Hyderabad tried spin as early as the third over but it didn't matter a jot. Nazir didn't let any thing affect his style of play. He didn't mind the injury that forced him to get a runner, nor the dropped catch by Nicky Boje at long-on when he was on 58. He simply carried on walloping. He brought up the hundred with a fierce heave over long-on but by then Hyderabad had long surrendered.

England are unlikely to risk paceman Ryan Sidebottom

England are unlikely to risk paceman Ryan Sidebottom as they attempt to bounce back against India in Monday's second match of their one-day series.
The 30-year-old left-arm seamer missed Friday's humiliating 158-run loss in Rajkot with Achilles problems.

Coach Peter Moores said he was keen for him to come into the side, possibly for the third match on Thursday in Kanpur.

"Everyone who has seen Ryan bowl knows his great strength is moving the ball both ways," said Moores.

"That's something we would like to have in the side. Ryan has certainly bowled very well in the nets with great control."
When Sidebottom comes back they have to play him and drop Stuart Broad

Moores said it was not impossible for Sidebottom to play on Monday, adding: "If we're looking to risk him in the second game we'll see how he is on Sunday.

Lahore Badshahs v Hyderabad Heroes ICL Cricket Today Live

The script for the ICL 2008-09 finals has so far been a copy of last season's so it won't be a surprise, given that the Lahore Badshahs won the first of three matches, if the second game was tied.
But the Hyderabad Heroes will be keen to alter it instead of letting a bowl-out decide the championship. It will be difficult for them to overcome a Lahore side that has dominated its last five consecutive wins - the narrowest margin of victory in those games was a 13-run win against the Chennai Superstars. Everything has clicked for Lahore since beating the Chandigarh Lions by seven wickets at the start of this month. They haven't lost more than five wickets in four chases and scored a whopping 211 in the one game in which they batted first. Hyderabad also put in a couple of masterful performances - beating the Mumbai Champs by 79 runs and the Royal Bengal Tigers by nine wickets - but seemed to have lost some of their spark after just edging past Bengal in the semi-final.

There's no better time for Hyderabad's openers - Jimmy Maher and Ibrahim Khaleel - to give their side a scorching start before Saqlain Mushtaq troubles them with his variations. They haven't done so badly in the two matches they opened after Khaleel was promoted up the order - adding 49 in the first final - but in order to counter Lahore's imposing batting line-up which includes Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and the in-form Naved-ul-Hasan, Hyderabad will need something special from their openers.
The two teams opened the tournament with a farcical match which Hyderabad won after the floodlights failed in Lahore's innings. The organisers will hope that if Saturday's game is the last one in the season, it turns out just the opposite.

Yuvraj Singh today 100 runs vs Englan

Yuvraj Singh was unstoppable in compiling a brilliant 138 from just 78 deliveries © AFP

Despite suffering from a back injury, Yuvraj smashed a 64-ball ton in the first ODI against England in Rajkot First days for an opposition captain in India don't get much worse. Kevin Pietersen's decision to field because of an early morning start in Rajkot backfired spectacularly as India galloped out of the blocks and never looked back. What seemed a brave decision turned into an utter disaster with India posting 387 for 5 in 50 overs of ballistic strokeplay. Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag added 127 for the first wicket, after which Yuvraj Singh overcame a stiff back to slam an unbeaten 138 from only 78 balls. It was the fastest ODI hundred against England, while India's total beat the previous best against this team - Pakistan's 353 in Karachi in 2005. It was also India's best total at home and second highest anywhere.

The last time Yuvraj scored a hundred in a limited-overs game was on October 5 2007 against Australia. He dismissed that drought with a magnificent innings. Yuvraj began in the 24th over, after Sehwag had been brilliantly caught by Ian Bell at midwicket for a 73-ball 85. Shortly into his innings, Yuvraj had problems with his back and needed a brace. Steve Harmison decided to test him with some short balls and, though Yuvraj took his eyes off them, he pulled consecutive boundaries and rounded off the over with a steer past slip for four more. Those three strokes set the tone.

India took the third Powerplay after the 34th over, a move which prompted Pietersen to bring back Andrew Flintoff. Yuvraj, who had Gambhir running for him, took the opportunity to break free by hitting sixes off Flintoff and Harmison before raising his fifty with a classy off drive. Yuvraj's partnership with Raina for the third wicket had added 89 off 78 balls before his partner scooped Flintoff to Paul Collingwood at backward point for 43. Yusuf Pathan came and went for 0, pulling his second ball to midwicket. Yuvraj, not disturbed by the double blow, stood his ground and swatted a wayward Broad for six and four and brought up the 300 - and the fifty partnership with Mahendra Singh Dhoni - by smashing Samit Patel out of the ground in the 44th over.

Akmal steals thriller for Pakistan

A brilliant 24 off just nine balls from Kamran Akmal saw Pakistan snatch a four-wicket win over West Indies in their first one-day match in Abu Dhabi.
Kamran Akmal not out 24 9
Needing 17 off the last over, Akmal smashed two successive sixes off fast bowler Jerome Taylor before hitting the winning runs with one ball to spare.

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle had earlier scored a fine 113 as the tourists reached 294-9 from 50 overs.

Khurram Manzoor (69) and Shoaib Malik (66) also made valuable contributions.

Pakistan had looked on course for victory with Malik looking assured at the crease inside the final 10 overs.

But when the captain was dismissed by debutant fast bowler Lionel Baker in the 48th over with 33 runs till to go, momentum swung back in favour of the West Indies.

But Akmal - ably assisted by all-rounder Fawad Alam (26 not out) - maintained his composure, smashing his third ball for six before his two match-winning maximums in the final over.

Akmal's late heroics overshadowed Gayle's superb century, the first ever to be scored at the Zayed Stadium in the Emirate.

The West Indian skipper opted to bat after winning the toss and began tentatively with opening partner Sewnarine Chattergoon.

Vintage Inzamam packs off Chennai

Lahore Badshahs made their second successive ICL final with a masterful performance against Chennai Superstars in Ahmedabad. Lahore have raised their game as the tournament progressed and are peaking at the right moment. The best-of-three finals could be a repeat of the last tournament if Hyderabad Heroes beat the Royal Bengal Tigers in the second semi-final on Tuesday.

Naved-ul-Hasan, who had taken seven wickets in Lahore's last two matches, added three more to his tally to become the tournament's leading wicket-taker. With each of his scalps he swung the momentum back to Lahore. Ian Harvey had more than made up for the fall of his opening partner G Vignesh in the third over when Naved nailed him in the sixth. Harvey hit Mohammad Sami for two fours - in an over that cost 12 - and with Russell Arnold pushed Chennai past 50 when Naved bowled a fuller delivery outside off stump. Harvey tried to loft it but didn't quite get the middle of the bat on it and the catch was taken by Saqlain Mushtaq at mid-off.

Saqlain broke the next two big partnerships as Hemang Badani tried to push Lahore towards the 150-run mark along with Arnold and R Sathish. He conceded only six runs in his first over and the pressure got to the batsmen when he beat Badani with an offbreak at the start of his next. When Arnold came on strike four balls later, he chose to play a defensive shot but the ball beat his bat to take the off stump. Chennai's run-rate had dropped and at the half-way mark they had 86 for 3. But Badani found a capable partner in Sathish, who hit two consecutive fours off Sami. Badani decided to take the attack to Saqlain by launching him for a six over his head. But when he tried to do the same in his next over, he misread Saqlain's straighter delivery and was bowled for 37. Before Chennai could get away again, Naved took two in two overs. That meant Lahore were set a par score to chase

Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble addresses the media at his house in Bangalore a day after his retirement

one of world's greatest spinners, retired from international cricket, ending his captaincy in the current series with Australia.

The announcement by the 38-year-old came Sunday in New Delhi where the third test between India and Australia ended in a draw. Kumble had injured a finger during the test.
"The body gave me the decision and the injury helped," said Kumble, the BBC reported.
Among his achievements in an 18-year cricketing career, Kumble had a rich haul of 619 Test wickets, the third best in the world. That feat was crowned in 1999 when he took all possible 10 wickets in an innings when India played Pakistan.
Mahendra Singh Doni, a hard-hitting batsman and India's wicket-keeper, is expected to succeed Kumble as captain.
India, under Kumble, took a 1-0 lead in the current series against Australia, regarded as the best cricketing tam in the world.

Discussing his retirement, Kumble said, "It was tough, especially after 18 years when you have been so competitive," the BBC reported.

"I had already made the decision yesterday (Saturday), I knew I would not be fit (for the fourth and final test against Australia) and I don't want to let the team down."

WICKET Dravid bowled Lee 11
Just when The Wall was set for a stay of match-drawing proportions, he plays on to a full Brett Lee delivery attempting to drive. Punter sticks his finger up in the air and suddenly the level of chirps goes into overdrive. Dravid's indifferent series with the bat continues. He also scored 11 in the first innings too. Out comes Sachin Tendulkar, who fends off the final two balls without too much bother. The Aussies are sensing something out of the ordinary here.
